From smelly bathroom to spa-like bathroom – that’s what this post is all about. In today’s post, I’ll share 8 simple tips to make your bathroom smell like a spa!
As a busy wife, mama, blogger, etc., I rarely ever find myself “at the spa”. But I do try to make time for myself, time to decompress and fill my cup. Time for a DIY mani-pedi in my little at home “spa”, aka our master bathroom. But one thing that can either add to, or take away from, the “spa-like” feel of that space is the smell.

A smelly bathroom is just that, smelly. But when your bathroom smells good… it can feel like so much more than just a bathroom. A bathroom that feels clean and smells good can truly feel like a spa in your home! A place you can go to refresh, recharge, and relax.
8 Ways to Make Your Bathroom Smell Like a Spa:
I included 8 different tips on how to make your bathroom smell like a spa. When you look through all the tips below, you’ll see that they fall into 1 of 2 main categories: eliminate bad smells by cleaning & add in a pleasant fragrance.
You don’t want to just cover up bad smells, or mask them with air fresheners. I recommend a mixed approach. First, you want to eliminate the odors, and then add in some things that smell good to you to really make your bathroom smell like a spa! You do not need to do all 8 if unless you want to. Feel free to pick one or pick a few that you’d like to try in your home!
1) Open up a window to let some fresh air in.
Start by opening up a window and airing it all out. Let from fresh air from outdoors fill your bathroom and freshen things up naturally. Don’t have a window in the bathroom? Open up a window in the next room over and turn on a fan to circulate the fresh air into the bathroom.
2) Eliminate bad odors by giving your bathroom a deep clean.
While you have the window / windows open, go ahead and give the bathroom a good deep clean. A thorough cleaning will make a world of difference in how your bathroom smells. This is true for any room in your home, but especially in the bathroom!
So wipe down the counters, scrub the toilet and the tub, and mop the floors. And be sure to pay attention to those harder to get to areas where bad odors can linger. Think about the area around the bottom of the toilet, the inside of your bathroom trash can, etc. Giving these areas a little extra attention is a good way to eliminate any funky smells that take away from the spa-like vibes we’re going for.
3) Get rid of any lingering smells in your linens.
Linens and fabric items can hold onto lingering smells and cause unpleasant odors in your bathroom. With all the moisture in this space, it can start to smell a little less than fresh. Damp bath towels and hand towels, wet bath mats, musty shower curtains, etc. can all play a part in the smell. So throw it all in the wash to eliminate lingering smells and odors, rather than just masking that smell with other things.
4) Replace any worn out linens with new ones.
Sometimes washing isn’t enough, and you may need to consider replacing items that are worn out, items that hold smell and aren’t able to be cleaned and freshened up. You shower curtain liner is a great example of this!
We have this washable, fabric shower curtain liner in our bathroom. I love it because I can throw it right into the washing machine with a little vinegar or bleach, and run a hot cycle to really get the grime off and make it smell fresh and clean again.
Also, our shower curtain is something I get asked about often… So I wrote a whole post about it, and I included sources for a ton of similar french country farmhouse shower curtains on the blog.
5) Add some fresh cut flowers or eucalyptus stems.
Now that your bathroom is clean, you can start adding in some scents or fragrances to really make it smell like a spa! Flowers are a great way to add a fresh fragrance to your bathroom naturally! You can also hang a bundle of fresh eucalyptus stems in the shower to really amp up the spa-like feel of the space.
5) Arrange fresh herb clippings in a bud vase.
While a vase of flowers may add a subtle floral smell to your bathroom, fresh cut herbs can truly fill the space with their scent. I once clipped some fresh rosemary and lavendar sprigs from the herb planters on our front porch. The cuttings fit perfectly in these vintage, found bottles turned bud vases. And they made the entire bathroom smell so so good!! And the scent lasted long after the stems dried out!
For a longer-lasting scent, you can even add a live herb plant to keep your bathroom smelling fresh as long as you take care to water it! Just make sure your bathroom gets enough light to suit your plant.
If you don’t grow fresh herbs, or maybe you’re like me and just forgot to water yours so they died. You can also pick up a small container of rosemary clippings from the grocery store. They come in a small pack with just a few sprigs of fresh cut herbs, and they are typically located in the refrigerated part of the produce aisle near the lettuce.
6) Display scented potpourri on the counter or a shelf.
I love potpourri because it’s no-maintenance. You don’t have to worry about watering it like you do a plant, and it lasts so much longer than cut flowers! You can find potpourri in a wide variety of scents, or you can even make your own DIY potpourri. Either way, it’s a great way to add fragrance to your bathroom and make it feel like a luxurious spa.
7) Burn a candle in your favorite scent!
Scented candles are a great way to add fragrance to a bathroom. My personal favorite candles are from Antique Candle Co. Their candles are clean burning candles. They are made with US-grown soy wax, 100% lead-free cotton wicks, and they are scented with non-toxic fine fragrance oils and essential oils. They’re also a small business which I love, and their candles truly smell amazing! They truly fill a room with their scent, making them a great option to help you make your bathroom smell like a spa.
Scents are really personal, and everyone has their own favorite scents when it comes to candles. But these are some of my personal favorite scents from Antique Candle Co, especially for a bathroom!
Your bathroom can truly feel spa-like, an oasis and a place of rest and relaxation in your home. A retreat if you will, and a place that you actually want to spend time in. But if you want your bathroom to really feel like a spa, the best place to start is with the smell!
