Balsam Hill Baby Nordmann Review: Which Size is Right for Your Space?

Last Christmas we added 2 Balsam Hill Baby Nordmann Christmas Trees to our home. And now that we’re setting them up for a 2nd Christmas, I thought it was time to share my full, 1 year review of them here on the blog!

If you landed here, you’re likely looking for a smaller scale Christmas tree for your home. One that fits your space, but doesn’t sacrifice on the beauty and realism. And one that still feels extra special in your home this Christmas.

Because a smaller tree shouldn’t feel any less magical!

I was looking for that same kind of tree too, and I landed on Balsam Hill’s Baby Nordmann for our home. I can’t wait to show you how pretty these trees are and why we love them so much!

The Baby Nordmann

The Baby Nordmann is like the petite version of the Nordmann Fir, which just so happens to be my favorite full size Balsam Hill Christmas tree! (I did a full review of the Nordmann Fir here if you want to check that out.)

The Nordmann is such a beautiful, life-like tree. So when I was looking at getting a couple tabletop trees, the Baby Nordmann’s were at the top of my wish list.

The branches on the Baby Nordmann actually look and feel like the ones on a live Christmas tree. Some branches split three ways at the end, and some feature a single stem full of little needles. The variety really adds to the realism in my humble opinion!

The color is the perfect “Christmas tree green”, though it’s hard to get the color to show up on camera the same way it looks person. There even seems to be a touch of tan / brown near the stem at the base of the needles. Just like there would be on the woody stem part of a live tree!

I would say the Baby Nordmann trees are pretty full for their size. They have a plump, roundness to them that makes them feel substantial, with plenty of branches to hang ornaments from.

I fell in love with them for their shape and just how life-like they looked in the photos. But seeing them in our home, it’s still unreal to me how realistic they look.

They remind me of the mini trees you’d find at the garden center, or at your local Christmas tree lots!

The Baby Nordmann comes pre-lit with clear LED fairly lights. I was worried this wouldn’t feel like enough light for my taste, but they are actually pretty bright in person. And they don’t look as cool toned as I had expected. I prefer warm light, so that was a plus!

These trees come with their own storage bags and their own little stands. The stands are flat, square-shaped bases with a little part in the center that sticks up that the tree trunk slides onto. And they’re actually very sturdy in person!

Setting up our Baby Nordmann trees was super easy! Just place the stand where you want the tree, position the bottom section of the tree onto the stand, then set the top section in place. Then plug it in, tap the foot pedal switch to turn on the lights, fluff it, and decorate!

Now please don’t judge your Baby Nordmann, or any Christmas tree for that matter, for how it looks straight out of the box. You HAVE to fluff it! I think it took me 20 or so minutes to fluff each of these petite trees. I didn’t time myself, but it didn’t feel like long at all. And it was well worth it!

Which Size is Right for Your Space?

You’ll notice the Baby Nordmann comes in two different sizes. The 3.5′ and the 4.5′.

On Balsam Hill’s website, you can select “Tabletop Trees” in the menu, and they’re one of the prettiest trees that pop up under that category!

I thought I’d show both sizes on the two “tabletops” in our guest bedroom. They both technically fit, but the 3.5′ version seems a little more suited to a tabletop. So let’s chat about this smaller tree first!

The 3.5′ Baby Nordmann – my favorite tabletop tree!

The 3.5′ Baby Nordmann is only a foot shorter than the taller version, but it’s also a little less bulky all the way around.

According to Balsam Hill’s website, there’s only a 4 inch difference in the width of both trees. But in person I feel like that makes all the difference depending on how much space you have available, and where you plan on displaying your tree.

Also, the stands for both trees are slightly different sizes. Which makes sense! But it’s not something I would have thought of when I ordered them. The smaller tree’s tree stand is roughly 10″ by 10″, whereas the larger tree’s tree stand is 14″ by 14″.

In this guest bedroom I feel like the 3.5′ Baby Nordmann was the perfect size tabletop tree for this little vintage bedside table!

It could have also been displayed on the floor, but I feel like it really shines best sitting up on top of the table.

I like to change things up from year to year, so I’m not sure where this tree will go this Christmas. But a couple places I’m considering are in our dining room, either on an antique buffet or sitting on the counter in the coffee bar. Or perhaps in the kitchen, on our kitchen island?

I love the size and scale of the 3.5′ Baby Nordmann because you really can tuck it into smaller spaces like that, and still add a little Christmas cheer to spaces where you really don’t have the room for a full size tree.

The 4.5′ Baby Nordmann – my favorite tree for a child’s bedroom!

Now let’s chat about the taller Baby Nordmann!

By now you know, I LOVE the Baby Nordmann. Both sizes! But I don’t know that I would consider the 4.5′ version to be a “tabletop tree”.

Standing at 4.5′ tall and 36″ wide at the base, this size tree felt a little too bulky sitting on top of the dresser in our guest room. But it was the perfect size to display at the end of the bed!

Now maybe if you live in a really grand home, like one of those historic Victorian style homes with a big formal entryway and a large table in the center of the room. I could totally see it working atop a table in a space like that!

But for our guest room, I think the size and scale of this tree is better suited to sitting on the floor.

This year I’ll likely set this tree up in either the guest room again, or maybe in Jake’s office? I haven’t quite decided yet.

Either way, the taller Baby Nordmann is a great size to add to smaller spaces that might feel overwhelmed by a full size Christmas tree.

Think about the bedrooms, your office, your entryway or mudroom, or maybe even the playroom. It could also work great in an apartment!

I originally chose the 4.5′ Baby Nordmann with our guest bedroom in mind because I think it’s the perfect size tree for a smaller space like this. And this year, I ended up ordering 2 more to put up in both of my kids’ bedrooms for Christmas!

How We Decorated Our BH Baby Nordmann Christmas Trees

Here’s a little peek at how the kids decorated their new 4.5′ Baby Nordmann trees this year.

I let them decorate their trees all on their own, and they LOVED it!

My daughter likes to bake, and she LOVES the color pink. So we found these new sweet treat ornaments to add to her collection this year. They were a hit!

And this is my son’s tree!

He is obsessed with dogs right now, so I found these cute little reindeer pup ornaments to add to his collection!

Here’s a look at how I decorated both the 3.5′ and the 4.5′ Baby Nordmann trees last Christmas! The ones I styled in our guest bedroom above.

The shorter tree landed on top of the white dresser to the right of the bed.

And the taller tree ended up sitting at the foot of the bed. I added a knitted throw blanket around the base as a makeshift tree skirt.

This 4.5′ tree honestly reminds me of the little tree Kevin McCallister cuts down and decorates in the movie Home Alone. So that was the vibe!

I wanted both of these trees to feel very nostalgic, like a 90’s Christmas.

So I added some reproduction shiny brite ornaments, a few hand-me-down ornaments from my grandparents, and a few ornaments I thrifted.

I also added some red beaded garland for a little more color!

And that little tree stand I used for the 3.5′ tree? That’s actually an outdoor umbrella stand I found at an estate sale!

Who is the Baby Nordmann PERFECT for?

Honestly, Balsam Hill’s Baby Nordmann trees could be perfect for anyone who loves Christmas and wants to add a little holiday cheer without taking up as much space as you’d need with a full size tree.

It’s a great tree for a kid’s bedroom or playroom. Places where you need to leave plenty of open room for them to play. And spaces where you want to add just a little touch of Christmas!

It may be the perfect size tree for you, because you like the idea of having a tree in every room.

And how pretty would that 3.5′ tree look sitting on your kitchen counter this Christmas?! How perfect would that 4.5′ tree be for your guest room? In your office? Or your entryway?

It could also be the perfect tree for your Grandma who doesn’t want the hassle of setting up a full size tree anymore.

I have vivid memories of the way my Granny would set up her tree each year. It was about the size of these trees! Easy to grab and go, not to heavy for her to carry.

Once Christmas had come and gone, she’d leave all the ornaments right where they were, and throw a trash bag over the whole thing before packing it away for the season. Then next year, she’d take the trash bag off and say “Look, I decorated!”

She would have loved this room and these trees!

What I love about the Baby Nordmann trees is that they really can fit just about anywhere, and they still look just as pretty, and just as realistic as a full size Christmas tree from Balsam Hill.
