How to Make a Christmas Tree Topper with Bottle Brush Trees

You only need a few supplies, and a couple minutes to tackle this DIY project.

Mine took me about 20 minutes, and a large part of that is because I was also filming it and taking photos while I worked.

Supplies You Need for this DIY

You can use any size of bottle brush trees you like. For reference, my bottle brush trees are 9 inches tall from the bottom of the wood base to the top of the tree.

The bigger your bottle brush trees are, the bigger your star will be.

I found these cream bottle brush trees at Amazon. And I also found these white bottle brush trees at Michaels.

Step by Step Instructions for a DIY Bottle Brush Tree Topper

Step 1: Bend your Bottle brush flat trees at the base

Most bottle brush trees come already attached to a circular wooden base.

You want to bend the tree flat to the base so it sticks out like mine does in the photo below.

Do this for all 5 bottle brush trees.

Step 2: attach the wood bases to each other with hot glue

The bases of the trees are pretty large. So you’ll need to arrange them in a way that lets them overlap. Otherwise, the hole in the center of the star will be huge!

Start by arranging three of the bottle brush trees in a triangle shape. Sortof… you can kindof see the triangle shape in the photo below.

These three bottle brushes will make up the top point of the star, and the two legs at the bottom.

Use hot glue to to attach the side of one wood circle to the next, until all three of your bottle brush trees are connected. This makes your first layer of wood circles.

Next you’ll want to add the remaining two bottle brush trees. The arms! These two will make up the second layer of circular wood bases.

Scooch the bottle brush trees out of your way if you need to. They can easily be bent back and shaped at the end.

Use your hot glue gun again to attach the remaining bottle brush trees on top of the three you already glued together.

They should fit together tightly, leaving just enough room in the center for your ornament!

Step 3: attach an ornament to the center using hot glue

Attach an ornament to the center of your star using hot glue. I opted for a vintage white ball ornament I found at the Liberty Antique Festival.

Step 4: create a hanger with floral wire

Last step! You want to create a hanger with floral wire. This is how you’ll secure your bottle brush star to the top of your Christmas tree!

Start with a very long piece of wire, and begin wrapping and weaving the wire in and around the bottle brush tree bases.

Leave yourself enough wire at the end so that you can use that wire to wrap around the top stem of the tree.

You can create a wire loop that slides over the tree. Or leave the wire in “string” form, and “twist-tie” it onto the tree.

I opted for the “twist-tie” method! And I should have taken a photo of this step, but I was so excited to put our star on the tree I forgot.
