Balsam Hill’s Fraser Fir Flip Tree and Why We HAD to Have It!

At the risk of sounding dramatic… we HAD to have Balsam Hill’s Fraser Fir Flip Tree for Christmas!
Last year, I got the opportunity to work with Balsam Hill and it completely changed how I look at artificial Christmas trees. They set the bar so high y’all!
So I was really excited to work with them again this Christmas. Especially since we were in the market for a new Christmas tree for the cottage!

We ultimately chose the Fraser Fir Flip Tree from Balsam Hill, and I can’t wait to share all my thoughts on this tree with you today… including why I felt like we HAD to have the flip tree version of this pretty tree!
I’ll share a few photos of the tree and show you how we decorated it this year. And I’ll also give you my honest review in case you’re considering a flip tree for your home this season!
Balsam Hill’s Fraser Fir Flip Tree
If you’re new here, we just wrapped up construction on a guest cottage, right next door to our farmhouse. So we wanted to pick out a new Christmas tree out for the cottage now that construction’s over and my parents are all settled in their forever home!
Balsam Hill’s Fraser Fir was one of the trees we fell in love with because of it’s super realistic looking branches and the traditional shape of the tree!
We chose this 7.5 foot slim Fraser Fir flip tree with clear LED lights. The cottage has a 9 foot ceiling, and I think the 7.5 foot tree is the perfect height tree for 9 foot ceilings!
But this tree comes in so many different size and shape variations, it’s easy to find one that will fit your space and your needs.

(FYI, the wide version of this tree doesn’t come as a flip tree, but the slim and full versions do!)
Sometimes it’s hard to see the actual tree underneath all the ornaments and decorations. So I wanted to share a few “nekkid” pictures of our Fraser Fir Flip Tree here so you can really see the details and take it all in.

We opted for the clear LED lights, but this tree can also come with clear AND color lights.
Our Nordmann Fir tree (one of the trees we chose for our farmhouse), has the color changing lights, and it’s such a cool feature!
The color of this tree is perfection in person! I’d say it’s the perfect Christmas tree green. Not too dark, not too shiny.

The branches are super realistic looking, and there’s a good variety of them too which was a nice surprise.
This tree actually has 3 different branch styles, which is what makes it look so realistic!
On each arm of the tree, you have a few branches that can be bent to point straight up or curved to the side.
Then you have a few the branches that split into three little branches at the very end.

And there are even a few branches that split twice! With side branches splitting off at the middle, and then splitting again into three little branches at the end.
I’m probably not explaining that the best way, but just scroll back up and look at that last photo to see the branch that splits twice.
I think all the variation makes this tree look fuller and even more life-like!

The Fraser Fir truly is a beautiful tree. But one of the biggest appeals of this tree for us is that it came as a flip tree – which makes set-up so easy!
What is a Flip Tree?
A flip tree stays attached to the wheeled tree stand at all times – which means no heavy lifting, and a much easier setup!
Balsam Hill’s flip trees look just like a regular artificial tree – only they are 10 times easier to set up!
Once you have it in place and decorated, you won’t be able to tell the difference between a flip tree and a standard tree.
And honestly, with how realistic these trees are, you can barely tell the difference between a live Fraser Fir and Balsam Hill’s Fraser Fir!
Setting up a Standard Artificial Christmas Tree
With a standard artificial Christmas tree, you have to physically lift each section out of the box or tree storage bag.
Then you have to physically lift them up, one by one, and set them in place in the tree stand.
Oh, and don’t forget to fish out those wires to connect all the lights from one section to the next. And make sure your tree is standing straight up and level before you !
Artificial Christmas trees can get pretty heavy. Especially if you have a larger / super tall tree!
And setting them up is a process, and one that often requires two people just to get the tree all put together.
Setting up a Flip Tree
But the flip tree on the other hand – I was able to set it up all on my own. And without breaking a sweat I might add!
The bottom half of the tree comes already set in place inside the rolling tree stand. But it comes upside down.
Here’s a picture of our flip tree, straight out of the box! See the wheeled tree stand at the bottom?

Another thing I love about our Balsam Hill trees is that they come with their own tree storage bag!
These trees are an investment, but they’re also very well made. And they’re meant to be used year after year, Christmas after Christmas. So the fact that they come with their own storage bag, specifically designed to fit your exact tree is just such a nice touch!
To set up a flip tree, you start by rolling the stand into place. Then after you lock the wheels, you literally flip the bottom half of the tree right side up. It will click into place once it flips.
The heaviest part of the tree stays attached to the wheeled stand, so you never have to lift it!
Next, you place the top half of the tree on top of the bottom section… then fluff and decorate, and you’re all done!
Setting up a flip tree is so much easier than setting up a normal tree.

Why We HAD to Have the Flip Tree for the Cottage!
Now that you’ve seen our flip tree in action, let me give you the backstory and “the why” of it all.
If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you might know the “the why” already. But to make a long story short, we wanted the flip tree… no, make that HAD to have the flip tree for my mom.
Last Christmas, we almost lost her. And if that sounds dramatic, that’s cause it was. It was really scary!
My parents were living with my little family at the time. Construction had just begun on the cottage that my parents now call home. And right before Christmas, my mom’s health took a turn for the worst.
Have you taken the tour?
We built a new-old cottage right down the gravel drive from our farmhouse… and I put together a mini tour with all the photos!
When mom’s health started to go downhill, all I could think was “what about the grandkids? What about her cottage? And what about Christmas?”
My mom had a really hard December last year. And she started the New Year off battling cancer. But I’m so happy and so thankful to share that she’s doing amazing now!
So this year, after the year my mom has had, I wanted her to enjoy this Christmas.
I wanted her have a Christmas tree that would be easy for her to set up all on her own, no matter what this Christmas, and all the Christmases to come look like!
Because there are two things you should know about my mom. #1 She loves Christmas. #2 She is very independent.
I didn’t want her worrying about lifting such a heavy tree. And I didn’t want her to feel like she had to ask for help to set her tree up whenever she was ready. I wanted her to continue doing all things she wants to do, on her own timeframe, just like she always has.
So when I thought about what tree we needed to get for the cottage and for my mom, I knew it HAD to be a flip tree!
If you have someone in your life like my mom – someone who is very independent and LOVES Christmas, but needs setup to be simple and easy – then the Flip Tree can truly be a gift of independence!
How We Decorated Our BH Fraser Fir Flip Tree
My mom was so excited for this tree y’all! She has been sewing her heart ever since we got the tree set up and fluffed.
The first thing she made was this pretty red and white quilted tree star. It’s based off the Ohio Star / sawtooth start quilt pattern and I think it turned out so good!

We added this quilt I bought at Home Goods years ago around the base of the tree. I think it made the perfect tree skirt. And it coordinates so well with her DIY quilt star tree topper!

Then I got the idea for mom to make some quilt block pattern ornaments to go with the tree topper and the quilt / tree skirt. Something to tie it all together, and add a little more red to the tree.

I gave her the idea, and she ran with it!

Look at all these pretty ornaments my mom made… I love all the different patterns!

But I think this one just might be my favorite!

And here’s how the whole tree and all the DIY ornaments turned out!

Who is the Flip Tree Perfect For?
If you’re wondering whether a flip tree is the right tree for you, you’re not alone. And the truth is, really anyone can enjoy and appreciate the ease of a flip tree!
But I think they make the perfect tree for anyone who wants a realistic-looking tree that’s super easy to set up – especially if heavy lifting is a no-go.
Think older parents and grandparents, or loved ones whose health limitations determine what they can physically do and lift.
Essentially, they’re great for anyone who loves decorating but doesn’t want the hassle, and honestly for anyone who just wants Christmas to feel a little simpler and a whole lot more enjoyable. If “easy” is the name of the game at your house… this tree is it.
