9 DIY’s Inspired by Antique Quilts (P.S. my mom made #6 and #7!)
I’ve always had a thing for old patchwork quilts. And lately I’ve come across some of the most creative DIY’s inspired by antique quilts. So I’ve been compiling them all, and I can’t wait to share them with you here!
Some of these projects involve creating something new, but inspired by the traditional quilt blocks and patterns seen in antique quilts.
Some of these DIY’s involve re-purposing actual antique quilts into something new altogether.
Welcome back to my P.S. series! P.S. is short for Pins & Saves, and it’s a little series where I gather up all the ideas I’ve been quietly collecting.
Don’t forget to pin this for later!

My great grandmother on my dad’s side was a quilter. And her hand-made, hand-me-down quilts are one of my favorite, and most cherished collections!
My mom has also done her fair share of quilting through the years. Lots of baby quilts! And even a couple larger ones we’ve used in the kids’ rooms.
One day I’ll pull out my sewing machine and follow in their footsteps!
But for now, let’s just scroll through the DIY’s I’ve been pinning and saving – all inspired by antique quilts!
Chair Reupholstered with Double Wedding Ring Quilt
First up, is this not the coolest quilted arm chair you ever did see?

Someone used an old double wedding ring quilt to reupholstered this chair, and I am just in awe of how it turned out!

Now I could NEVER cut up my great grandmother’s quilts. But maybe if I found a cutter quilt on Facebook Marketplace? That might could work!
Using Antique Quilts to Upholster Bench Seat Cushions
Next up, another quilt upholstery project. These antique quilt covered bench seat cushions are STUNNING!

I love that the creator mixed and matched quilts for this DIY. It just feels so fun and playful, and such a creative way to actually use her collected quilts!
Framed Red and White Star Quilt Block Art
I found this next DIY idea on Pinterest, and I think it’s a bit more beginner friendly than the first two projects!

I’m slightly intimidated at the thought of sewing an entire quilt, at least in my current season of life. But I think I could easily start with a few simple quilt blocks, and frame them as art in the meantime!

Or I could also use paint and a canvas to create my own version of this DIY – no sewing needed!
Painted Floors with a Quilt Block Border
Speaking of paint…
I gasped when I saw these beautiful painted wood floors!

They have the prettiest red, white, and blue quilt block border. Gosh they’re dreamy!
Ohio Star Quilt Block Patterned Painted Floors
Another beautifully painted floor – check out this Ohio star quilt pattern painted floor!
Are you kidding me?

I’ve wanted to paint our farmhouse floors for years, and this photo and these floors have my wheels turning.
Let’s switch gears though, because I have a few more quilt-y DIY’s to show you, and they’re all Christmas projects…
Red and White Quilt Block Christmas Ornaments
We’ll start with the quilt block Christmas tree ornaments my mom crafted this past Christmas!

I can’t get over how good these DIY Christmas ornaments turned out!

And if you love mom’s ornaments, wait till you see what else she made…
Ohio Star Quilt Block Christmas Tree Topper
Y’all, she made a matching quilt star Christmas tree topper to go with all the quilt block ornaments!

I blogged more photos of mom’s tree all decorated for Christmas here.
We used one of my red and white quilts as the tree skirt to complete the look. And I know that’s not quite a DIY, but if you love quilts, I know you’ll love that too!
Cutter Quilt Christmas Stockings
A dream project of mine… but again I’ve gotta find the perfect quilt for it! I would love to make our own Christmas stockings out of an old quilt.
I just hate the thought / could never actually cut into one of my great grandmother’s heirloom quilts.
So I’m on the lookout for one that’s already pretty worn and tattered, basically falling apart. That way I can salvage the good parts of it and turn it into something like this!
Old Quilt Turned Christmas Tree Skirt
And while I’m at it… maybe I’ll find one I can turn into a Christmas tree skirt too!
How pretty is this red and white quilted tree skirt from NeeNee Twigs?! She makes all kinds of things from old quilts. So if DIY’s not your thing, go check out her IG!
One day I will actually sit down and tackle some of these DIY’s that have been swirling around in my brain. I’ll let ya know when the time comes!
But for now, I’m glad I have them saved here so I can come back whenever I find the perfect antique quilt!
