Simmer Pot FAQ’s:
Before we get into the recipes, I want to answer a few frequently asked questions about simmer pots in general.
What is a simmer pot?
A simmer pot, also called a stovetop potpourri, is essentially just a way to add a scent to your home by simmering a few fragrant ingredients in water. I like that it’s a natural way to add a scent to our farmhouse, because it’s essentially just simmering water with food, herbs, spices, etc.
how do you make a simmer pot?
Grab a pot your and add your favorite fragrant ingredients (follow a recipe or create your own). Then fill your pot with water. Put the pot on the stove over low heat and simmer. The steam from your simmer pot will carry the scent of the ingredients into the air and all through your home.
Do simmer pots actually make your house smell good?
Yes! Simmer pots are one of the best ways to make your home smell good! Think about when you cook dinner, or even when you make coffee, and you can smell it from the next room over. The best candles can fill a room with their scent, but simmer pots can fill your entire home with an amazing aroma. And the best part is that simmer pot recipes are very customizable to you and the scents that you like best!
how long does a simmer pot last?
You can simmer your stovetop potpourri anywhere from a few hours, to a few days. Just be sure to add more water as needed as it evaporates throughout the day. Also, there’s no need to refrigerate your simmer pot if you want to re-heat it again the next day. Just be sure to turn your stove off at night! Then in the morning you can add fresh water and re-heat to enjoy your simmer pot again.
Now that we have that covered, let’s dive into these fall simmer pot recipes!
Fall Simmer Pot Recipe #1: Pumpkin Spice Simmer
This pumpkin spice simmer pot will make your whole home smell like fall, and might even have your family asking “did you bake a pumpkin pie?” For aesthetics purposes in creating this blog post, I bought a separate little pie pumpkin from the grocery store to photograph and to use in our simmer pot this week. But if you’re carving a pumpkin this fall, you could totally use the cut out eyes and the mouth pieces from your jack-o-lantern in your simmer pot!
Pumpkin Spice Simmer Pot Ingredients
- a couple pumpkin pieces
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1 tsp ground allspice
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- a few whole cloves
- enough water to fill your pot
Fall Simmer Pot Recipe #2: Banana Bread Simmer
I have to admit, I was a bit skeptical about this one. But if you love the smell of fresh baked banana bread like I do, you will love this banana bread fall simmer pot recipe! Again for aesthetics purposes, I used a fresh yellow banana with very few brown spots for these photos. But use what you have, and honestly, a simmer pot would be a great way to use up a banana that’s on the way out.
Banana Bread Simmer Pot Ingredients
- 1 banana
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- enough water to fill your pot
Fall Simmer Pot Recipe #3: Fall Harvest Simmer
This fall simmer pot recipe is the perfect combination of some really iconic fall scents. Sweet like apple pie, warm and comforting like all your favorite side dishes at Thanksgiving. The fall harvest simmer pot just may be my favorite of them all!

If you know me in real life, you know I LOVE to cook but I rarely ever cook a meal the exact same way twice. I cook with my heart and my eyes, and I taste as I go, adjusting and adding a little more salt, or a little more sugar as I see fit. I may refer to a recipe, but I don’t follow it to a “t” because to me a recipe is just a general guideline, a suggestion, a starting point.
My approach to simmer pot recipes is much the same! I play around with the “recipes”, and change it up based on whatever ingredients I have on hand. I invite you to do the same! Feel free to mix it up when you’re creating a fall simmer pot for your home. Add the herbs that you like, add the spices that smell good to you to make it your own.
I hope you enjoyed today’s post! If you make any of the fall simmer pot “recipes” I’ve shared here on the blog, let me know. I’d love to hear what you thought about them!
